Uhhh uhhh ahhh uhhh ahhh THUNDER! Uhhh uhhh ahhh uhhh ahhh THUNDER! Uhhh uhhh ahhh uhhh ahhh THUNDER! - Thunderstruck by AC/DC Listening to music can make a run easier. But listening to even great music at the wrong time can make any run harder. Learn how to set up your music playlists the right way so your music doesn't coach you to run the wrong way.
I started running in my early 40s, doing a couch to 5k with lots of walking. A week or so in, the final running interval on my workout coincided with Bruce counting the E Street Band in for the 2nd time, about 4:30m into Wrecking Ball.
To this day I don't think I've ever run so fast or joyously.
I also did something so bad to my lower back that I couldn't walk properly, never mind run, for a month.
I still think a good shuffled playlist can make for a good 'musical fartlek' though -- when used responsibly...
A shuffled playlist for a fartlek IS good coaching. And badass timing to have the Boss count in the band right when you need it. Cheers to you and cheers to Bruce Springsteen and the E… Street… Band!
I like running with something beautiful, introspective, ambient. Like a Satie piano piece or Miles Davis "Blue in Green" This brings me joy and puts me in that "Headspace" frame of mind... Once I relax into the run I power down. It's my best time to think. I loved reading this, you write exactly how you talk. That's a good thing... thank you.
I have started way too many runs with a "Thunderstruck" approach; it wasn't until recently that I fully let myself get to know the run before getting down to the music. I like to spend the first 5-10 minutes listening to a "study beat" now and then diving into the pump-up jams. Great read here coach cheers
So many good songs you mentioned are on my Playlist for runs.
On days that I do choose music I will often start living on a prayer! Which was for a while, literally. But my first mile is my slowest of every run, though not always the same pace. Crazy train and paranoid often occurs around miles 5 or 6 to make sure I finish with good effort!
However, some days I just prefer the rhythm and beat of my feet hitting the pavement, augmented with percussion of my raspy breath!
100%. A month ago one of my teenagers was annoying me so I went for a run to a playlist of Seattle grunge, cranked it up and ran hard. Lasted 10 mins and nearly collapsed 😂
Is that Daniel The Engineer??

Those are good days when you make your own music.
