This is a good read. My youth soccer coach used to yell "finish strong" at the end of our mile runs for practice and that phrase stuck with me throughout my life as a motivator... and not just in sports. I'm 36 now and this phrase is such a key to life, a moto of sorts. You are kind of like a long distance coach for me so thank you for helping to revive and reaffirm this message of Finishing Strong.

I did my local parkrun on Saturday just gone (28th Dec), and there was a different marshal there. He was jumping up and down every time a runner approached, yelling with all his heart “you’re doing great! Go you! Look at you, you’re doing it! Fantastic! You’re beautiful! I’m so impressed! Keep it up!” etc. I nearly cried as I went past him on my last lap, he was just what I needed that day and he made my year.

Happy new year, Coach Bennett and thanks for your podcasts which I discovered via Nike Run Club this year. I’m a slower runner, starting over again, and it’s going GREAT this time. I feel so positive and committed and that whatever I can do is just fine. So thank you!!

Great advice for everyone — Finish Strong. When my niece was running her first 5k (after years of being a volunteer at a local marathon), she asked me to run with her and her dad. My brother-in-law liked having me there because he says I’m good at encouraging people. What did I tell her to do at the end of the race? You guessed it — not Sprint but FINISH STRONG. Best reward was the smile on her face when she crossed the line knowing she had run further than she had ever done before and faster than her aunt.

Thanks for a wonderful newsletter and podcast. I often recommend them because they’re about running but not about running.

All the best in the new year! See you at the starting line.
